DHCP 169.254 Self-Assigned APIPA IP Address Resolution
Isolate and fix Windows defaulting to an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) 169.254.x.x address when the DHCP server fails to respond to lease requests.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Network status shows yellow triangle with: No internet access or Unidentified network
- Running ipconfig reveals Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address starting with 169.254
- Default Gateway is completely blank in ipconfig output
Interactive Fix Checklist

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew to re-broadcast DHCP discovery packets across the local subnet.
Restart Windows DHCP Client service
Press Win+R, type services.msc, locate DHCP Client service, verify Status is Running and Startup Type is Automatic. If greyed out, restart PC.
Power cycle local router and switches
Unplug power to your router and any intermediate network switches, wait 30 seconds, and plug back in to clear corrupted DHCP lease tables.
Test temporary manual static IP address
Open Network Connections -> right-click adapter -> Properties -> IPv4 Properties -> choose Use the following IP address -> enter 192.168.1.185 (or matching subnet), Subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.1, DNS 1.1.1.1.
