Uneven CPU cooler mounting pressure causing memory channel loss
Overtightening or unevenly torquing CPU cooler screws bends the LGA socket substrate, causing pin contact loss on delicate DDR5/DDR4 memory controller traces and preventing .
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- PC boots with 1 stick in slot B2, but fails to with 2 sticks in A2/B2
- Motherboard DRAM debug LED illuminates solid amber or red
- Occurs immediately after installing a new CPU cooler, AIO pump, or contact frame
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Loosen cooler screws by half a turn
Turn each cooler mount screw counterclockwise by half a turn in a cross pattern (top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left) to relieve asymmetric PCB flexing.
Remove cooler and inspect CPU socket pins
Remove the cooler, lift the socket retention lever, and inspect the motherboard LGA socket (Intel LGA 1700 or AMD AM5) with bright light for any bent or flattened gold pins. SAFETY NOTE: If removing a CPU cooler (especially AMD AM4), warm up the CPU with a brief workload first, then twist the cooler gently left and right before lifting. Never yank straight up, as cold paste can rip the CPU out of the socket and bend pins.
Clean CPU contact pads with isopropyl alcohol
Wipe the gold pads on the underside of the processor with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe to remove thermal paste residue or finger oils.
Reinstall cooler using alternating diagonal torque
Place the cooler flat on the IHS and turn each screw only 2 turns at a time in an X-pattern until hand-tight stops naturally without forcing.
