BSOD: HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x00020001)
The Windows Hyper-V hypervisor encountered an unrecoverable exception, typically caused by conflicting third-party virtualization software (VirtualBox, VMware) or unstable CPU voltage.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Stop code: HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x00020001)
- Occurs when launching WSL2, Windows Sandbox, or Docker Desktop
- System hangs or reboots during virtualization workloads
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 4 steps completedVerify CPU Virtualization (SVM / Intel VT-x) is enabled in BIOS
Enter setup, open Advanced CPU Configuration, and confirm that 'Intel Virtualization Technology' (VT-x) or AMD 'SVM Mode' is set to Enabled.
Disable conflicting third-party virtualization hypervisors
If VMware Workstation or Oracle VirtualBox is installed, update them to versions that support the Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHPX) API, or uninstall them temporarily.
Update WSL2 Linux kernel package
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: wsl --update followed by wsl --shutdown to refresh the Hyper-V microcode container.
Reset CPU curve optimizer / undervolt settings
Aggressive negative CPU Curve Optimizer (PBO) offsets frequently pass standard stress tests but fail under the nested virtualization context switching of Hyper-V. Reset offset to 0.
