Breadboarding a PC: Testing core components outside the case on cardboard
Isolate persistent short circuits, motherboard stand-off shorts, and non- issues by assembling bare minimum components outside case.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- PC fails to turn on or clicks off immediately inside case
- Motherboard suspected of shorting against metal chassis or standoff
- Fans twitch for 1 millisecond and shut down
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 4 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Disassemble motherboard and place on non-conductive cardboard box
Remove motherboard from PC case. Place it on the flat cardboard motherboard box. CRITICAL: Never place it on an anti-static bag (the outer surface of anti-static bags is electrically conductive).
Install only the absolute bare minimum components
Install ONLY: CPU + CPU cooler, 1 stick of in slot 2, 24-pin ATX power cable, and 8-pin EPS CPU power cable. Disconnect all SATA cables, front panel wires, case fans, and RGB headers.
Bridge the two Power Switch pins with a flathead screwdriver
Locate the front panel header (JFP1 / PANEL). Momentarily touch the tip of a metal screwdriver across the two 'PWR_SW' (Power Switch) pins for 1 second to turn on the board. SAFETY: Bridge ONLY the two PWR_SW pins. Never touch 12V RGB headers, USB headers, or audio pins, as shorting voltage rails will permanently damage the motherboard.
